MICA Retail Yatra
The ‘MICA Retail Yatra’ takes
students and faculty for a month-long tour
through the metros, mini-metros and a number
of big and small towns across the country.
This is an opportunity for students to see
retailing as it exists and assess the potential
in the future. In the earlier tours they have
met and interacted with several stalwarts
of the retailing industry e.g. Mr. Kishore
Biyani, chairman, Futures Group (formerly
Pantaloons), Mr. Arvind Singhal, president,
Technopak Advisory - retail consultants; Mr.
Brotin Banerjee chief operations officer,
Barista; Mr. R. Sriram, formerly of Crossword
; Mr.Viraj Gandhi managing director, The Medicine
Shoppe, Mr. Susil Dungarwal, formerly of The
Loft.
These entrepreneurs and senior corporate executives
provide the students with valuable insights
into their business models, strategies and
operations, with which they have built some
of India’s largest, modern, organized,
large format retail brands. This has given
the students exposure to the various existing
and evolving retailing formats. The Retailers
Association of India (RAI) endorses MICA Retail
Yatra as a learning pedagogy.
MICA International Retail –
Yatra
As a part of MICA’s endeavour to provide
the best learning opportunity for its students,
the MICA International Retail – Yatra
has been instituted since 2006-07. The students,
accompanied by select faculty members visited
three major retail destinations - Bangkok,
Kuala Lumpur and Singapore over two weeks
in October 2006. While the students visited
malls, hyper-markets, specialty stores, high
streets, food bazaars, service retail concepts
and other high-end retailing destinations,
the classroom learning was provided by the
partner institutes Nanyang Technology University,
